ROBERT'S RACE ACROSS THE WEST JUNE 2008

ROBERT'S RACE ACROSS THE WEST JUNE 2008

(THE RACE IS FINISHED NOW AND THE RESULTS ARE AT THE END OF THIS PHOTOBLOG11   YEA TEAM!!!)

Robert has been training for months to participate with 4 of his biking buddies in the famous "RACE ACROSS THE WEST", which is from Oceanside, CA to Taos, NM. It is the first part of the RACE ACTROSS AMERICA, and is approximately 1000 miles. It started at 2PM PDT on Wednesday, June 11, 2008, and they expect to arrive in Taos sometime after midnight on Friday June 13, depending on how the wind and weather impact their speed.
They are racing as a relay team, with 5 racers, and they have 4 friends as their support team, who drive a mortor home and a large SUV, as well as doing general assistance and repairs as necessary.

The racrers are:
Dennis Mueller
Scott Weas
Rich Tennessen
Robert Carr
Brian Gustin

The support crew is:

Randy Randolph (Austin, TX)
Aaron Lisco (Hawaii)
Nick Rogne (Wisconsin)
Sean Peterson (Wisconsin)

Dennis has prepared a nice summary of the "RACE ACTOSS AMERICA" the I have added to the end of this photoblog.

The team is posting some photos whenever they can during the race. Look at

The team is sponsored by KEEPANDSHRE.COM, and here we see Robert proudly showing off the team jersey. He is at his home in San Francisco, making the final preparations for the race.

Here is the view of the back of the jersey

Just returning from a short run to check the bike.

Doing some tuning of the bike before packing it for the trip to Southern California

It is now Monday morning, two days before the race, and the team is begining to assemble at Robert's parents home  in Palos Verdes.  Sean has arrived from Wisconsin with most of the riders equipment.

The bikes and all gear has ben moved to the garage , where the final organizing will take place. The bikes are given their final  tweeks for the race,

This SUV was driven from Wisconsin and will be the chase vehicle.

Aha, Robert arrives with the rental Motor home that will be the other support vehicle

Marie is admiring the interior

Nicely furnished.

Those large plasic boxes were modified by Dennis and provided to the racers to keep all their stuff organized.

I really admire that neat bike stand, wish I had something like that when I maintained the family bikes.

After the bikes are preped, the team dresses and starts on a short checkout run. A handsome group!!

Robert and his Dad, yours truely.

There they go!

And now they are back.

It is now about 5:45 AM on Tuesday, and 7 get ready to drive to Oceanside, to register for the race.

Backing out of the driveway

Good Luck, Guys!!

Hop In!!  We have to get going!

And there they go

Make the U turn

And speed off.

Sean has the bikes and support stuff in the SUV, prepared to drive to the airport and pick up the last member of the support team, and then drive to Oceanside to join the rest of the team.

we are a little worried about all those bikes.

But there he goes!! Good Luck and keep safe!!

Here is some interesting info about the race that was sent by Dennis:

For those not aware of the event, Race Across America is a long
standing bike race that goes from Oceanside, CA to Annapolis, MD.
There are multiple categories for solo riders, teams, people on
recumbent bikes, etc...  Overall, there are several hundred folks that
are entered into the event.  Our team  (KeepandShare.com) is entered
in the Race Across the West Category.  That is the same route as the
other riders except we get to stop in Taos, NM after slightly more
than 1,000 miles of pedaling.

The solo riders (yes folks ride all the way across the country) left
on Saturday and Sunday.  They will generally take 7-14 days to cross
the country.  The teams depart tomorrow (Wed.) at 2PM Pacific Time.
That time was chosen so that the racers cross the hottest part of the
dessert during the middle of the night (yes you do ride 24-7 rain,
shine or snow).  You can track the progress of our team, or any of the
riders, by going to raceacrossamerica.org  If you clic on the rider
stats link it will show the times that the riders pass certian check
points.  Our goal is to make try and average about 18.5 mph and get to
Taos around 2AM Saturday morning (Eastern Standard Time).  Two small
obstacles (the rockies and wind direction) will have a great influence
as to our ultimate finish time.  The major motivation, however, will
be the need to be done by 10AM on Saturday since we need to get to
Albuquerque for flights home by 5PM.

Our team goal is obviously to win.  However, we owe it to our sponsors
and supporting riders to at least take second place.  We will not let
you down.....

Thanks for sharing the photos, and providing some inspiration/motivation!  After looking at all the photos I spent Sunday doing maintenance on my bike and going out for a ride.
