Prayer
  1. How often to pray
    1. Always:
      1. "Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up." Luke 18:1
      2. "Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them."
    2. Never have lack of prayer due to giving up: "Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up." Luke 18:1
  2. What To Pray For
    1. God's name be hallowed - Matthew 6:9 (Luke 11)
    2. God's kingdom come - Matthew 6:10
    3. God's will be done - Matthew 6:10
    4. Daily bread (daily necessities) - Matthew 6:11
    5. Forgiveness (in same way we forgive others) - Matthew 6:12
    6. Not to be lead into temptation - (this is OK to pray for) - Matthew 6:13
    7. Deliverance from the devil - Matthew 6:13
  3. Attitude to use in praying
    1. Humble
    2. But also persistent and bold. God is honored when we are bold and persistent.  "...goes to him at midnight ... Don't bother me ...he will not ... yet because of the man's boldness he will get up and give him as much as he needs"
    3. Reverent Submission:  "and he was heard because of his reverent submission."  Hebrews 5:7
  4. When to pray
    1. When one is with others.  One of the best ways to encourage them.  "encourage one another daily, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness." Even one's spouse can be hardened.  Be sensitive to seeing whether they are becoming hardened.
  5. Emotion/Passion is OK
    1. Jesus sometimes prayed with loud cries and tears.  But they were balanced with his re  "During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission."
  6. What is necessary for God to answer prayer
    1. Reverent submission (word study here) "During the days of Jesus' life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission."
    2. Faith
      1. Must believe and not doubt  "But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does." James 1:6-8
      2. Must believe that he rewards those "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him" Hebrews 11:6
      3. Must come from faith "But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin." Romans 14:23
  7. Jesus Example
    1. He's still praying now, in fact, he's praying all the time now.  "Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them."
  8. Promises to remember
    1. "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."  Hebrews 13:5
  9. What to do when praying besides intercession
    1. Praising God  "Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise--the fruit of lips that confess his name." Hebrews 13:15
